PETER B. MCINTYRE is a junior biology concentrator at Harvard College. He wrote this article for Microbiology of Soil and Water, taught by Professor Ralph Mitchell. Mr. McIntyre currently studies social behavior related to air breathing in South American catfish in the laboratory of Professor Karel Liem. He plans to pursue a career in ecological research, focusing on aquatic ecosystem dynamics. He gratefully acknowledges the guidance and constructive criticism provided by Prof. Mitchell, Jonathan Sorci, Professor William Bossert, and particularly Ellis McKenzie. PETER B. MCINTYRE

The Effects of Psychological Stress and Other Environmental Factors on Incidence of Diseases
The main purpose of this paper has been to discuss the effects of psychological stress and other environmental factors on incidence of diseases. We were specifically concerned with stress that increased susceptibility of uninfected hosts when exposed to infection. If such stresses also reduced resources, fecundity and/or survivorship, there was a reduction in the host carrying capacity. In addi...

متن کاملAssessment of aquatic environmental quality using gyrodactylus sp. as a living probe: parasitic biomonitoring of ecosystem health
Biological indicators are species that can be employed to monitor environmental quality and ecosystem health. Different groups of organisms such as plants, animals, bacteria and parasites regularly produce certain molecular signal in response to changes in their environmental milieu. Parasites are important tools for providing wealth of information on physicochemical quality, environmental stre...
